Maine Coons are nicknamed the “Gentle Giants” of the cat world, not only because of their patient and laid-back temperament, but also because they’re the largest domestic cat breed in the world. You’ve probably already seen the photos of monstrous Maine Coons next to other cats and dogs and being held by humans, and while most Maine Coons don’t quite reach such sizes, the average Maine Coon weighs between 12 to 18 lbs.
Male Maine Coons are slightly larger than their female counterparts, weighing between 13 to 18 lbs while females weight closer to 8 to 12 lbs.
Size Comparison to a Normal Cat
The average domestic cat weighs between 9 to 11 lbs, a far cry from the the Maine Coon’s massive size. But weight is not everything, and below you can find a comparison between certain measurements on the Maine Coon and a normal cat.
Head to Body | Head to Tail | Head to Tail | Height | Weight | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Normal Cat | 18 in | 30 in | 12 in | 9-10 in | 9-11 lbs |
Maine Coon | 24 in | 38 in | 14 in | 10-16 in | 12-18 lbs |
As you can see, Maine Coons reign supreme when it comes to size. In fact the biggest domestic cat in the world was a Maine Coon named Stewie who held the Guinness Book of World Records for Largest Domestic Cat, spanning 48.5 inches in length and weighing 33 pounds. That’s a big feline!
Size Comparison to Other Cat Breeds
While a normal house cat won’t nearly come close to the whopping size of the Maine Coon, there are a few other cat breeds that give them a run for their money. Some of them are:
- Savannah Cat
- Norwegian Forest Cat
- Ragdoll
- Ragamuffin
