Cats like catnip because it makes them feel good. When your cat licks and smells the herb, she experiences a release of nepetalactone that sets off a euphoric reaction. It’s believed that cats are reacting to the nepetalactone like it’s a pheromone (scent). And cats rely heavily on scents to send helpful signals to the brain, like pleasure or fear.
What is Catnip?
Catnip is a plant that is a member of the mint family and is sometimes called “catmint” or “catswort”. There are more than 250 species of catnip around the world.
Interestingly, catnip has been shown to work as an insect repellant. Although it may not work as well as DEET, catnip has been shown to repel mosquitos, flies and cockroaches.
What Does Catnip Look Like?
You’re probably most used to seeing catnip as small, green bits, almost like an herb you’d find in your kitchen. However, this is actually the dried up and broken up version of the actual plant. Catnip in its natural form is a plant that grows about 3 ft. tall with sturdy stems and heart-shaped leaves. The tips of the plant’s stems will sprout blue, white, pink or purple flowers.
Catnip is most common in it’s dried up form because it can be stored longer and is easier to give to your cat.
How Do Cats React to Catnip?
Every cat will react differently to catnip, but most cats love to purr and roll around in it. Some cats will get really energetic and race around the house, attacking their toys and acting spastically. Other cats will get lethargic and just lay around.
Kittens and older cats are less likely to be affected by catnip. Overall, about 50% to 75% of all cats are affected by catnip.
Also, because catnip is part of the same family as mint, cats will often react to mint in a similar way. It’s not uncommon for a cat to lick its owner’s face or hair after they’ve brushed their teeth with mint toothpaste.
Is Catnip Good for Cats?
Catnip is completely safe for cats to consume, and in many ways it’s good for cats. Catnip will often make cats energetic and zoom around the room which is a great way for your cat to exercise. Therefore, if you’re trying to help your cat lose weight, catnip can be a great tool.
Also, because catnip has euphoric effects on cats, it can actually make them happier. Everyone wants to feel great, so why shouldn’t your cat, too?
Finally, catnip can be used as a great training treat for your cat. Help them get used to the cat carrier or reward them for good behavior by using catnip.
