Milton, Florida – The Santa Rosa County Animal Shelter in a bold move turned to Facebook to find a new home for one of their male cats, and their post was refreshingly honest.

The post started with, “Are you looking for an affectionate and loving new friend to snuggle with? It’s probably NOT this guy.” This humorous beginning grabbed the attention of hundreds on Facebook.

The cat in question, Willard, had been living at the shelter since September 2020. The staff quickly learned that his grumpy nature was just part of his personality. “He likes to be petted… but only sometimes. Head rubs? Allowed until they are not…then you are firmly reprimanded,” they shared.

“Did you want to tell him where to sleep? Willard laughs at your ignorance. Willard is beholden to no man. Or woman,” the post continued, presenting Willard as an independent spirit.

The post didn’t sugarcoat Willard’s qualities. Instead, it came across as a warning: “If you are willing to be owned by a crabby old ginger who may or may not ever show his thanks, please let us introduce you. Willard has the final say though. Good luck!”

Interestingly, this unconventional approach worked better than anyone expected. Instead of finding a foster family, they found Willard’s owner, who had been searching for her missing cat, Jay, for over a year. She had given up hope after checking all the surrounding animal shelters.

Now reunited, the owner was overjoyed. “She was so joyful and surprised to see him, and we’ve never seen Willard happier or more playful,” shared a spokesperson from the shelter. Willard, or Jay, is now back home, and the shelter, while acknowledging he might still be a grump, is relieved knowing he’s as happy as he can be.
