Meet Fern, the incredible cat mom who not only raised her litter of six but also welcomed a bonus kitten into her fur-loving family. Now, it’s time for Fern to be someone’s baby, and her journey is nothing short of heartwarming.

Fern, along with her seven adorable kittens, found their way to IndyHumane, an animal shelter in Indianapolis, IN. Jennifer, a foster volunteer, took them into her home, creating a comfortable space for Fern to nurture her lively bunch.

“Fern was a very attentive mama. The kittens were already weaning, but she still let them nurse often and kept them really clean,” Jennifer shared, highlighting Fern’s dedication.

In the foster home, Fern had a nursery with a pen for breaks when needed. Jennifer made sure the little ones were well-fed, creating a perfect setup for all seven to thrive.

“After filling their bellies, the littles would curl up in a cuddle-puddle, and if Jennifer was in the pen, they’d pile into her lap and purr up a storm.”

Fern, with her all-you-can-eat buffet and daycare expertise, got to enjoy some me-time, cuddling with her kittens or basking in sunbeams.

“When the kittens were away for a vet visit, Fern appreciated the peace. As soon as they returned, she gave them thorough baths and plenty of snuggles.”

Even after weaning, the kittens found comfort in nursing on their loving mama, and Fern embraced the extra affection.

The story gets even more charming as Jennifer discovers the bonus baby, Aspen, among the five tabbies. Aspen had her unique schedule and distinct features, making her the delightful surprise in Fern’s fur family.

“Aspen was often sleeping while the others played, and playing independently while they slept. She’s never really shown much interest in the milk bar. She is also the only one with long ear tufts, and her fur feels silkier.”

As the kittens blossomed into independent young cats, Fern gracefully took a backseat, ready to retire from motherhood. She craved more attention and affection from her humans, longing to be the center of their world.

“She has been such a good mama and took amazing care of her babies. She likes human affection and will be so happy when she’s in her forever home, getting to be the baby herself.”

Fern’s journey from a loving mom to a cherished baby is a testament to the incredible bond between cats and their humans.
