Brisbane, Australia: A cat named Smokey found herself in a tough spot. Her previous family had moved away, and sadly, they left her behind. It’s a situation that happens all too often due to the rental crisis, and it left Smokey without a home.
But fate had other plans for Smokey. A kind-hearted lady couldn’t bear to see her fend for herself, so she decided to rescue her and provide a safe haven. Little did she know that Smokey wasn’t alone; she was expecting!
As time passed, Smokey’s belly got bigger and rounder, revealing her pregnancy. Realizing that the expectant cat mom would need more care than she could provide, the lady reached out to Best Friends Felines for help.
“We agreed, and Smokey was picked up by one of our maternity carers,” they shared.
As soon as Smokey stepped paw into her foster home, she knew she was safe. She relaxed, plopped down on her side, and started kneading away with her happy paws. She was delighted to be back in her element, surrounded by good food and soft, snuggly things.
“At her first vet visit, the vet determined that she’s had several litters before, but this will be her last. She is super sweet and smoochy. Her fur is so soft like cotton candy.”
Smokey quickly turned into mush around people. She would purr and stretch her toes in the air when getting her belly rubbed. She was content to have a safe haven to raise her kittens and a dedicated carer to support her on this journey.
Just a few days after her arrival, Smokey was ready to welcome her little ones into the world. She began nesting and showed an abundance of affection. The following day, her belly popped, and she brought four precious kittens into the world – two girls (a dilute tortie and a torbie) and two boys (solid grey and grey tabby).
“We have four perfect little ones, and Smokey is doing great, being a very doting mother.”
Smokey didn’t waste any time and hopped right to work, cleaning and feeding all four hungry mouths without a second to spare. She was very hesitant to leave her kittens, even for a brief moment. Since their birth, she’s been getting the “breakfast in bed” treatment around the clock.
Kerry, the foster mom, is working alongside Smokey, making sure the momma is well-nourished, the kittens are thriving, and their nursery is kept clean and comfy. It’s a team effort, and the kittens are growing like champs, thriving right before their eyes.
Smokey was given a second chance just in time so her kittens wouldn’t have to be born outside. Once the kittens are weaned and old enough to go off on their own, Smokey will retire from motherhood. She’ll be cherished and adored for the rest of her life, just as the center of attention she deserves to be.
