Meet Mattie, the incredible cat who underwent an amazing transformation after having over two pounds of matted fur removed. This orange tabby was brought to the York County SPCA in Pennsylvania in a dire state, so matted that he had to be transported in a dog crate.
Dr. Weekes, the York County SPCA Shelter Medical Director, described Mattie’s condition as the worst case of matting he had ever seen. The mats were so dense and heavy that it was difficult to see his actual body beneath them. It was clear that Mattie needed urgent help.
The medical team wasted no time and began the process of safely shaving off the mats, which weighed a whopping 2 1/2 pounds. They provided him with medical treatment and showered him with love and care during his recovery.
Despite being scared and anxious, Mattie slowly adjusted to his surroundings, finding comfort in his kitty condo and developing trust in his human friends. The dedicated care team at the shelter provided affection, space when needed, and enrichment to help him feel safe.
As time went on, Mattie’s beautiful fluffy coat started to grow back, revealing a magnificent lion’s mane. His personality blossomed, and he began seeking affection and head scratches. At around 10 years old, he had some health issues, including diabetes, but that didn’t dampen his spirit.
After spending several months at the York County SPCA, Mattie transformed from a suffering stray into a handsome and kind-hearted cat ready for a new chapter in life.
Chandler Scull, a veterinary technician and Vice President of an animal rescue in Pittsburgh, came across Mattie’s story on social media and felt an instant connection. Having recently lost her diabetic cat, Tulip, Chandler knew in her gut that Mattie was meant to be part of her family.
She reached out to the shelter and discovered it was a perfect match. Chandler and her boyfriend traveled a long way to bring Mattie home, and though his health issues made the initial transition challenging, Chandler’s expertise in feline diabetes management helped stabilize him.
Now, Mattie enjoys a loving forever home where he receives plenty of attention and pets on demand. His unique personality, both sweet and spicy, shines through. Chandler and her boyfriend are hopeful that Mattie will have many quality golden years ahead, living like a true king.
