On a cold and windy day in Valdese, North Carolina, Avery Rogers clocked in for a shift at her family’s food truck, Lucky Dogs NC. With her expectations of a few hours of serving food to hungry customers, a small, furry creature across the parking lot caught her attention. Customers confirmed that it was a cat, and after a while, the cat started inching closer to the truck. Could it be the smell of the food that drew it closer?

“A lot of people think she could smell the food from our truck,” Rogers told The Dodo.

Rogers only had one treat to offer the cat – a hot dog! Was it really the best choice? Surprisingly, the cat devoured it in just a few bites and stayed around the truck for the rest of Rogers’ shift. When the shift was done, Rogers walked over to the cat, expecting it to run away, but instead, the cat snuggled right up in her arms!

“I was fully prepared for her to run away, but she walked right up to me,” Rogers said.

At the vet, it was confirmed that the cat was around 1 year old and that no microchip was found, so the cat was officially Rogers’. She named her Blue, in honor of the food truck’s most popular hot dog, the Bluetick Hound.

Blue quickly settled into her new home, getting to know her cat siblings, Bagheera, Bear, Blake, and Benley. But most importantly, she’s been a source of comfort for Rogers, who recently received a prognosis of 1-2 days for her childhood cat, Bentley.

“It’s a hard time, but she’s so cuddly,” Rogers said. “She showed up right when we needed her.”

It looks like Blue was the perfect furry companion to have during this difficult time!
