A soldier, Christine Bouldin, traveled thousands of miles from Afghanistan to North Carolina with a special furry friend by her side.
This friend, Felix the kitten, had a tough start in life. When Bouldin first saw her, Felix had trouble walking and kept wobbling around.
“I felt so sorry for her,” Bouldin said. “She couldn’t stand up and would flip over.” Despite this, Bouldin began to care for the kitten, feeding her with rations and making sure she was safe.
She soon learned that Felix had cerebellar hypoplasia, a condition affecting the cerebellum and movement.
Bouldin became close to Felix and wanted to take her home to the United States.
She asked around, but it seemed impossible until a veterinarian suggested Pam Constable, an American animal rescuer in Kabul. Constable was able to care for Felix until Bouldin could return home.
“Felix had a lot of special needs, but she found ways to do what she needed to do,” said Constable. “It’s very inspiring to see an animal like that just fight to live because so many people underestimate them.”
The next year, Constable flew to North Carolina with Felix, reuniting her with Bouldin and her family, including another cat named Gus.
Now Felix lives a happy life with her forever family and shows that with love and determination, anything is possible.
As they say, “the best endings are the happy ones!”
